Vol. 448 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special PAYE Allowance.

Seán Power

Question:

27 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Finance the initial cost to the Exchequer in 1995, and in a full year, of allowing the special PAYE allowance of £800 to all taxpayers. [1591/95]

The main categories of taxpayers not eligible for the PAYE allowance are the self-employed, including farmers, proprietary directors and their spouses assisting in the family business or on the family farm.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the full year cost to the Exchequer of extending the PAYE allowance to those groups at present not entitled to it is estimated at £61 million and the 1995 cost would be around £26 million. These costs include a provision for the likelihood of additional spouses assisting in the family business solely to avail of the allowance.
