68 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide funding under the INTERREG II Programme to extend the Erne navigation south-wards from Belturbet to Killeshandra and Killykeen in view of the substantial economic potential of this project and also its potential to further cross-Border development. [1448/95]
A number of projects involving the Shannon/Erne Waterway were carried out either under or in conjunction with the INTERREG I programme. While initial indications show a satisfactory level of interest in these developments it is too early to say whether there would be a sufficient economic return from extending the navigation system at this stage. The situation will, however, be kept under review.
