Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Scrapping of Motorcars.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

44 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Finance his views on the Society of Irish Motor Industries' proposal that a grant of £1,000 be provided by the Government for the scrapping of cars in excess of 10 years old which are currently registered for road tax, on the purchase of a new car, in view of the experience of such schemes in Spain, France, Denmark and Greece; and if he will make a statement on the matter, addressing the environmental benefits of the scrappage incentive. [1743/95]

This proposal is one of a number put to me for consideration by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry in their pre-budget submission. I can assure the Deputy that it is being considered in the context of the forthcoming budget.
