Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork University Hospital Staffing.

Máirín Quill

Question:

58 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the need to appoint an additional medical consultant cardiologist to Cork University Hospital; if his attention has been further drawn to the duration of the waiting list for patients in need of consultation in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1732/95]

Limerick East): The provision of services in Cork University Hospital is a matter in the first instance for the Southern Health Board. The Deputy may wish to know that my Department has made substantial funds available for the development of cardiac services in Cork. As part of that development a second consultant cardiologist post was sanctioned by my Department on 1 December 1994. I understand from the Southern Health Board that it is in the process of preparing a submission to Comhairle na nOspidéal in relation to this post.

I am confident that the filling of this second cardiology post will facilitate the further development of cardiology services in the Cork area.
