Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Optical Services.

Ray Burke

Question:

56 Mr. R. Burke asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the long waiting list for optical benefit in community care area 8 of the Eastern Health Board; and if he will make available the necessary finance to deal with this problem. [1708/95]

Limerick East): I am aware that there is a waiting list for ophthalmic services in community care area 8 of the Eastern Health Board owing to a steady increase in the number of applicants for services.

The Eastern Health Board currently has a system in operation which gives priority to applicants with special needs such as persons with certain medical conditions, and every effort is made to ensure that urgent cases are processed without delay. There is no waiting list for children requiring glasses.

The board is currently carrying out a detailed examination of the aspects of the scheme which are causing concern and my Department will discuss the matter further on foot of the outcome of the board's examination of the scheme, with a view to ensuring that all persons who need optical services receive them within a reasonable time.
