Vol. 448 No. 2

Written Answers. - Gender Change Operations.

Máirín Quill

Question:

72 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Health if his Department financed any gender-change operations in 1994; if so, the number of such operations; the cost of such operations; the original sex of the persons involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1793/95]

Limerick East): My Department has made inquiries from each of the eight health boards and I understand that one person from the Eastern Health Board area, following medical and financial assessment, received grant assistance towards the cost of hospital services and expenses for gender realignment surgery in 1994. The total cost to the Eastern Health Board was £6,090, and the original sex of the applicant was male.
