Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fraudulent Insurance Claims.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

175 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on whether fraudulent insurance claims are on the increase; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1866/95]

Insurers are not required to submit information to my Department in relation to fraudulent insurance claims, which are by their very nature difficult to detect. Consequently there are no precise statistics available on the frequency of such claims although it is generally accepted that there is a problem in this area.

The insurance industry and those public authorities which are self-insured have established computerised databases to assist in the detection and elimination of fraudulent or spurious claims. In addition, the Irish Insurance Federation has also established a sub-committee which acts as a conduit for the dissemination of information throughout the industry and as a co-ordinator for liaison with the Garda authorities.
