Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Claims Statistics.

Pat Upton

Question:

178 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in respect of claims for negligence and nuisance against his Department for each year since 1990, the total number of claims made; the total number of claims settled; the total amount of money paid in settlements; the total amount of money paid in legal costs arising from the settlements; the total number of claims outstanding at present; and the estimated cost of these claims. [2100/95]

Minister for enterprise and Employment (Mr. R. Bruton)

One claim for negligence against my Department was settled in 1992. A sum of £1,000 was paid in settlement and £2,798.10 paid in legal costs arising from the settlement. There are no claims currently outstanding.

I would also point out that there were three claims for medical expenses, totalling £199.94 which were paid by my Department under normal Department of Finance guidelines, but where negligence was not an issue. Furthermore, one claim for compensation was erroneously made to my Department.
