Vol. 448 No. 3

Written Answers. - Group Water Schemes.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

100 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for the Environment the number of group water schemes in operation in each county; the total number in the country; and the number of new schemes applied for in each county. [1814/95]

My Department estimates that some 5,355 group water schemes have been completed or are under construction since the programme was introduced over 30 years ago. Ongoing rationalisation and amalgamation of schemes, including the integration of groups into new public water supply systems, will have resulted in some decrease, relative to the above total, in the number of schemes which continue to operate as independent, privately-run schemes.

There are some 369 active proposals for new schemes at present. Information on the number of grant-assisted schemes for each county together with the number of proposed schemes is given in the following table.

My Department arranged with CSO that water supply data collected in the 1991 Census would provide more accurate information on, inter alia, group scheme supplies. I understand that this information should be available shortly.
