Vol. 448 No. 4

Written Answers. - EEC Directives.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

107 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment if EEC Directive 78/659 of 1978 will be extended to the entire Corrib catchment area, County Mayo, in view of the fact that it presently only applies to Lough Corrib. [2315/95]

The River Corrib and Lough Corrib have been designated for the purposes of Directive 78/769/EEC (on the quality of freshwaters needing protection or improvement in order to support fish life). My Department is at present considering further designations for the purposes of the Directive.

I understand that Galway County Council are considering the preparation of a water quality management plan for the Corrib catchment. This would afford the opportunity to address the monitoring and management needs for the catchment on a comprehensive basis.
