Vol. 448 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Stock.

Noel Ahern

Question:

108 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the local authorities that are now purchasing private houses as part of their housing stock; the total number of houses purchased last year; the average cost and comparison with newly built houses; and the percentage of the houses that originally were local authority houses. [2329/95]

Details of house acquisitions by local authorities, as part of their housing programmes, are published in my Department's housing statistics bulletins, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. Information on the total number of houses purchased last year is being compiled and will be published in the Department's annual housing statistics bulletin, 1994. Information in respect of the period to the end of September 1994 is available on page 29 of the September quarter bulletin.

Details of the cost of all houses purchased in 1994 is not available at this stage. However, the average cost of purchased houses for which Exchequer grants were claimed last year was £33,000; some of these houses were purchased prior to 1994. The estimated average cost of providing a new threebedroomed local authority house, excluding Dublin, in 1994 was £40,000.

Information on the percentage of houses purchased by local authorities that were previously owned by them is not available in the Department.
