Vol. 448 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hairdressing Apprenticeship Scheme.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

131 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the proposals, if any, he has to introduce a system for apprenticeship hairdressing in view of its designation in 1994. [2309/95]

In accordance with the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, FÁS, in consultation with the social partners, has been examining a number of occupations to establish the feasibility, or otherwise, of introducing apprenticeship-type training to these occupations. Initial research has suggested that there is a view within the hairdressing industry that the training for the occupation of hairdresser should be put on a more formal footing by designation of the occupation for apprenticeship.

Consequently the board of FÁS on 7 July 1994 gave approval in principle only, for the designation of hairdresser and approved the development of draft curriculum for the occupation, which development is nearing completion.

In addition extensive FÁS consultations are taking place with the representatives of the industry and, subject to successful conclusion of these discussions, a comprehensive submission will be brought forward to the FÁS Board covering the apprenticeship model, delivery arrangements, costs, funding and implementation. It will then be a matter for the board to take a final decision on the designation of the occupation of hairdresser for apprenticeship.
