Vol. 448 No. 7

Written Answers. - Transfer of Sentenced Persons Convention.

Mary Harney

Question:

37 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to enable the State to ratify and implement the European Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, to which the State became a signatory in 1989. [2816/95]

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Question:

61 Mr. Gallagher (Donegal SouthWest) asked the Minister for Justice when the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Bill will be introduced in order that Ireland may ratify the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons as well as an EU agreement on the application of the convention among member states; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2952/95]

Trevor Sargent

Question:

68 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice if she intends to ratify the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons in order that the families of prisoners overseas do not have to continue to endure unnecessary expense and hardship when visiting their relatives; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2836/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 37, 61 and 68 together.

Drafting of the legislation which would enable Ireland to ratify the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons is at an advanced stage and I hope to introduce it in the House in the near future.
