Vol. 448 No. 8

Written Answers. - Traffic Warden Statistics.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

53 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice the number of traffic wardens employed in Dublin city in each of the years 1985, 1988 and 1994; the cost to the Exchequer; and the income generated in each year. [2969/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of traffic wardens employed on 1 January in each of the years 1985, 1988 and 1994 were 126, 100 and 181 respectively.

The total cost to the Exchequer of employing these persons is estimated at £949,200 in 1985, £851,896 in 1988 and £1,611,256 in 1994.

The income generated by on-the-spot fines issued by traffic wardens only is not readily available and could only be compiled by the allocation of scarce staff resources to the task at disproportionate cost. However the total income generated by on-the-spot fines is estimated at £1,264,976 in 1985, £1,915,850 in 1988 and £3,391,980 in 1994. Some of those fines would have been issued by members of an Garda Síochána, but I am informed that the vast majority were issued by traffic wardens.
