Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

168 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Justice if she will examine a petition from a person (details supplied) in County Galway. [3307/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 and 168 together.

No record can be found in my Department of petitions from or on behalf of the individuals referred to in the questions. If the Deputy lodges petitions in the normal way, they will, of course, be considered.
The Deputy will be aware that it is contrary to long-established practice for a Minister for Justice to comment at Question Time on individual petitions for the remission or mitigation of penalties.I am satisfied that there is considerable merit in this practice to safeguard the privacy of individuals who may, for very personal humanitarian reasons, have recourse to the petitions procedure.
