Vol. 449 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Statistics.

Paul McGrath

Question:

95 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda per rank serving at 1 January 1995, for each of the last ten years. [4605/95]

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following tables. I should point out that prior to 1989 Garda recruits were included in the overall strength figures. Since April 1989, with the introduction of the two year training programme for recruits, only those members who have been attested to the force i.e. completed phase 3 of training, are included in the overall strength of the force. For example, on 1 January, 1995, there were 436 recruits in phases 1, 2 and 3 of training in addition to the total strength of 10,837.
