Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the information available to him on the quantities of production and market destination both at home and abroad of snails; the number of producers; and if he will give details of the material or reports available on the production and marketing of this product. My Department does not compile statistics on production and trade in snails nor details of the number of producers.
However three studies have been produced on the sector entitled as follows:
"A Study of the French Market for Edible Snails" (An Bórd Tráchtala); "Economic Aspects of Snail Growing" (Teagasc); "Irish Snails — Production and Marketing of Snails Produced in Ireland" (Bórd Iascaigh Mhara).
These studies contain statistical material and are available from the three organisations.
