Vol. 450 No. 3

Written Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

17 Mr. Callely asked the Taoiseach if he will consider publishing unemployment figures on a local basis such as by Dáil constituency or postal code area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4236/95]

The current monthly area analysis of the live register gives details of persons registered at each of 129 local Department of Social Welfare offices.

Detailed statistics in relation to small areas such as towns and district electoral divisions are available from the Census of Population. The small area population statistics compiled from the census include tables showing, among other things, the numbers employed and unemployed in each area. A wide range of cross-tabulations by demographic and household characteristics is also available. The small area population statistics, and other census analyses, provide detailed benchmark data on unemployment blackspots at five-yearly intervals.
