Tom Kitt

18 Mr. T. Kitt asked the Taoiseach the action, if any, he intends to take concerning recent reports questioning the validity of Ireland's official statistics, particularly those relating to GNP and GDP. [3785/95]

Bertie Ahern

Question:

19 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Taoiseach if he will make a statement on the present position with regard to the working group examining the CSO figures on exports and related matters. [3962/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 19 together.

Early last year concerns were expressed in the media about the accuracy of official statistics for trade and economic growth, and in particular for exports. The previous Government in response, established a interdepartmental group in July 1994, to examine the matter. The report of that group is expected shortly and we must await its consideration by Government before determining what action, if any, may be necessary.

As regards the validity of official statistics, particularly relating to GNP and GDP, I am satisfied that the figures for economic growth published by the Central Statistics Office are accurate. These statistics are compiled in strict conformity with international methodology and they represent the best available estimates.
