Vol. 450 No. 3

Written Answers. - Caravan Parks for Mobile Traders.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

40 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Environment the steps, if any, he proposes to take to provide caravan parks for travelling traders; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5052/95]

It is open to local authorities to provide caravan parks for mobile traders where they consider this would be appropriate. In so far as my Department is concerned, the priority is to provide funding for accommodation — either halting sites or housing — for the travelling families currently living on the roadside. At the end of 1993, the number of such families was 1,180. I do not propose to make funds available for accommodating mobile traders.
