Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sporting Event Grant.

Michael McDowell

Question:

67 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Education the reason £25,000 was allocated to a boxing match in Millstreet, County Cork. [3419/95]

A grant of £25,000 has been approved for the venue in Millstreet, County Cork, to assist in the staging of a major sports event in this country. An important element in my policy is the promotion of Ireland as a location for important sporting events and to raise the country's profile from the point of view of attracting tourists and sports people from abroad.

The economic benefits accruing to the country and to the region from staging such an event is the primary reason for allocating the grant to the venue in Millstreet.
