Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Service.

Ivor Callely

Question:

107 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education the number of schools which have applied and those which have been approved for a remedial teacher over the last 24 months; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5258/95]

Applications for a remedial teacher service can relate to individual schools or to groups of schools seeking the service on a shared basis.

My Department has received approximately 700 applications involving 1,100 primary schools over the past 24 months; post-primary schools are not required to make formal applications for posts.

During the period in question, I have allocated a total of 186 remedial teachers and these are delivering the service to 655 primary schools. I have appointed a further 25 ex-quota remedial teachers to 25 post-primary schools.

As recently announced, I propose to appoint a further 55 remedial teachers to primary schools and 76 ex-quota remedial teachers to post-primary schools with effect from September next.

These posts will be allocated on the basis of priority of need.
