Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Bail Statistics.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

163 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the total sum of money confiscated by the State from bailsmen for the last five consecutive years for which statistics are available. [6079/95]

The only records which are readily available relate to orders made for the estreatment of bail in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court and cash bail estreated and realised in the Dublin Circuit Court. Bail may be in the form of cash or sureties and orders made for the estreatment of sureties may not always be realised.

The total value of orders made for the estreatment of bail in the Dublin Metropolitan District Court and the total value of cash bail estreated in the Dublin Circuit Court in the years 1990 to 1994 inclusive was as follows:—

Calendar Year

Total Value of Bails Estreated

£84,039.75

£6,200

1993

1992

1991

£109,892.87

£8,000

1990

£21,250

Total

£525,790.35

£35,450

To compile the information in relation to all other court offices could only be done by the allocation of scarce staff resources at the expense of other important tasks.
