Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourist Fun and Amenity Park Development.

Ivor Callely

Question:

179 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he supports the view that the development of a main tourist fun and amenity park would assist in attracting tourists to this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5825/95]

I agree that the lack of an integrated, dedicated holiday park for family visitors represents a significant gap in Ireland's tourism infrastructure.

In order to address this and other deficiencies in our tourism product base, the Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-1999, includes provision to assist at least four unique projects of scale capable of generating extra tourism business to Ireland. Whether one of those projects might be a holiday park will depend on a suitable proposal being brought forward, which is capable of delivering jobs, additional tourist traffic and incremental overseas revenue to Irish tourism and the wider economy.
