Vol. 450 No. 8

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 30 dealing with three different topics. I propose to deal with these three topics separately and I will call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. In regard to the first topic I have received notice from Deputy Michael McDowell and I now call on him to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss a specific matter of public interest requiring urgent public attention, namely, the immediate threat to jobs in Ireland and to exports from this country arising from the present currency turbulence and which is compounded by the conflicting policy statements being made on the subject by the Minister for Finance.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, Accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I would love to know what is contemplated by that Standing Order.

In regard to the second topic. I have received notice from Deputy Michael Ahern and I now call on the Deputy to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I wish to seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the plight of the vegetable growers who supply Universal Foods, Midleton, County Cork, who are unable to harvest a substantial proportion of their crops because of the very inclement weather of the past six months and who, as a result, are facing financial ruin. I call on the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Deputy Yates, to provide financial aid to those producers as the former Minister, Deputy Joe Walsh, did for the horticultural producers of North County Dublin and the potato producers of County Donegal when they experienced similar weather related difficulties.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion. I now call on Deputy Geoghegan-Quinn to state the matter of which she has given notice to me.

I wish to seek the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following urgent and important matter, namely, the need for the Minister for Health to make a full statement regarding the British Medicines Control Agency's damning report into the Blood Transfusion Service Board to allay widespread public concern.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
