Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - EU Internal Market.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

47 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the extent to which the internal market has now been achieved within the EU; the number of Community directives that remain to be transposed into Irish law under our Treaty obligations; and the number of such transpositions by Ireland which are overdue. [4142/95]

A single market, within which goods and services can flow freely, has been substantially achieved within the European Union. The programme of Union legislation required to bring this about has been completed with a small number of exceptions. The emphasis now within the Union is on effective implementation of the measures in force.

Of the 216 single market directives requiring transposition into Irish law, 191 have been fully and three partly transposed. Arrangements are still in train for the transposition of the remaining 25 measures, of which 22 are now overdue and receiving priority attention in the Government Departments concerned.
