Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - Representations to British Authorities.

Tony Killeen

Question:

28 Mr. Killeen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the representations, if any, he has made on behalf of two Clare prisoners (details supplied) regarding their early release; and the response of the British authorities. [6251/95]

I am aware of the situation regarding the two prisoners referred to in the Deputy's question. The Embassy in London has been in contact with the Home Office with regard to certain aspects of their case. As regards the question of the particular release arrangements in this case, this is a matter which might most appropriately be pursued by the prisoners with their legal representatives.

Question:

29 Mr. Killeen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has sought the assistance of the British authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of a person (details supplied); and the response, if any, he has received. [6252/95]

I am aware of doubts and unanswered questions in the minds of the family concerned. The matter is a complex one involving technical and legal issues which I understand are being investigated by solicitors for the family. The Embassy in London has been involved in the matter for some time and is supplementing the efforts of the solicitors to secure further clarification of a number of the issues arising.

At the request of the family the Embassy wrote to the Home Office in November, 1994. Contact is being maintained with the Home Office on the matter and my Department will be in touch with the family as soon as a reply to the November letter is received.
