Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ground Rents.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

44 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice her policy on the issue of ground rents; whether she proposes to hold a referendum on the abolition of remaining ground rents; her views on whether a termination date should be set for the final abolition of remaining ground rents; her further views on whether expired ground rent leases should also be covered by any referendum or termination date; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6234/95]

The Government Policy Agreement contains a commitment to introduce legislation to abolish ground rents as a specific lien on residential property and convert them into normal commercial debt. I am at present examining the measures which would be necessary to give effect to this and have no further proposals in this area at present.
