Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - Rewards for Informants of Drug Finds.

Tony Killeen

Question:

45 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Justice if she will ensure that people who inform the authorities on findings of large quantities of drugs washed up on the coastline are adequately rewarded. [6247/95]

There are no provisions for the payment of rewards in respect to controlled substances found by members of the public and I have no plans to introduce any.

The menace of drugs is a matter of concern to all right-thinking people, not just the Garda, and members of the public who come across controlled substances have a moral obligation to society and to their fellow citizens to report such matters. In this regard, I wish to place on record my appreciation to all of those members of the public who have assisted the Garda by reporting such finds.
