Vol. 451 No. 1

Written Answers. - State Investment in Aer Lingus.

Tony Killeen

Question:

55 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the responsibility he has for Aer Lingus under the Air Companies Acts, 1966 to 1993; and if State investment in the company is adequately protected under these provisions. [6244/95]

The full extent of my statutory responsibilities for Aer Lingus is set out in detail in the Air Companies Acts, 1966 to 1993, which are publicly available and which can also be obtained in the Oireachtas Library.

These responsibilities cover a wide range of areas including, for example, the appointment of the Chairman and directors of the company, the laying of the accounts before each House of the Oireachtas and approval of the appointment of auditors. Since Aer Lingus is a commercial company operating in a highly competitive international environment, the safeguarding of the State's investment in Aer Lingus ultimately depends on the commercial performance of the company.
