Vol. 451 No. 2

Written Answers. - Castlebar (Mayo) Jobs Announcement.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

30 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will give details of the recent jobs announcement in respect of Davitt House, Castlebar, County Mayo, outlining the number of jobs involved, the work to the undertaken by these people and when these jobs will be filled. [6262/95]

During a recent interview on the forthcoming farmers' charter, I outlined what steps had already been taken and what was required in the future to bring about a modern user friendly service to the farming community. I also indicated that since the reform of the CAP in 1992 massive changes had taken place in the administration of payments. This has, inter alia, involved an increase in staffing in Michael Davitt House, Castlebar, from 137 in 1992 to its present level of 180 which will shortly be further increased by a number of additional staff. The increased staff numbers have put pressure on space in the office and I have secured a commitment from Office of Public Works that additional space would be provided to accommodate these staff.

The 180 personnel currently located in Michael Davitt House are working on a range of schemes including the administration of the headage-premia payments, quota allocations, collection of Land Commission annuities, forestry services and the complete range of farm development, livestock and veterinary services available to the farming community in Mayo.
