Vol. 451 No. 2

Written Answers. - Milk Production B Quota.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

35 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his policy regarding the possibility of a B quota for milk production being introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1698/95]

The existing EU quota regime is set to run until at least the year 2000 and no proposals have been made to change this. Some general ideas on a possible B quota type arrangement have been advanced by certain sectors of the dairy industry, especially in Denmark. These ideas and other longer term options are currently being looked at in the context of the study by Teagasc which has been commissioned by the Irish Dairy Board. It is necessary to await the outcome of this study before forming a view on whether a B quota arrangement is in the longer term interests of the Irish dairy industry.
