Vol. 451 No. 2

Written Answers. - Stray Dogs.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

71 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has to introduce stiffer penalties for dog owners who allow their dogs to roam; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6352/95]

The current penalty for the offence of allowing a dog to stray is a maximum fine of £500 and-or up to one month's imprisonment. The Control of Dogs (Amendment) Act, 1992, provides for an increased maximum penalty of £1,000 and-or up to three months' imprisonment. I hope to be in a position to make a commencement order bringing the 1992 Act into operation in the coming months, following completion of a comprehensive review of the dog licensing regime.
