Vol. 451 No. 4

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil Under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy O'Rourke.

I wish to request leave under Standing Order 30 to move the adjournment of the Dáil to discuss a matter of national importance, the commercial circumstances of Shannon Aerospace and in particular the future of the 750 jobs, approximately, within the company. In so doing I wish to complain bitterly about the attempts by the Minister for Enterprise and Employment to muzzle me on this matter.

I cannot allow the Deputy to deviate from the text of the notice. Having considered the matter fully, it is not considered to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

On a point of information, what does one do when one reads about a matter in the daily newspaper and cannot be heard on the matter in the Dáil? Can you give me any advice?

The Minister should hold the press conference here.

This matter has been ongoing for some time and is the subject of a question on today's Order Paper.

May I seek your advice? What can one do if one cannot move a motion under Standing Orders ad infinitum?

That matter is the subject of a question on today's Order Paper in the Deputy's name. I must proceed to the Order of Business.

That is the reason the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, Deputy Bruton, ran to the newspapers. He is a "scaredy pants" and will not answer questions in the Dáil. He is afraid to face hard questions. He is the Minister for unemployment.
