Vol. 451 No. 4

Written Answers. - Overseas Service Expenditure.

Pat Upton

Question:

15 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Defence the cost to the Exchequer of and the income derived from overseas services provided by the Army for each year since 1990. [6321/95]

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

By way of illustration, the actual additional cost in 1994 of all overseas missions in which members of the Defence Forces participated was £8,414,000. If normal pay and allowances are included, the total cost comes to £23,616,000. The maximum amount which we could expect to recover in respect of the services of these personnel is £6,057,000. Deputies will, accordingly, appreciate that refunds do not cover the additional costs incurred in sending military personnel on such missions.

The annual cost of supplying military personnel for service with overseas missions and the income derived therefrom in the years 1990 to 1994 inclusive are as follows:—

Cost (includes overseas and subsistence allowances, personal gear and equipment, family travel and education expenses and some personal travel and telephone costs)
