Vol. 451 No. 4

Written Answers. - Bad Weather Payments.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

50 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for the Marine the list of recipients of bad weather payments; the amount per claimant; and if claimants had existing liabilities to Bord Iascaigh Mhara. [6649/95]

The emergency aid scheme was introduced in April 1994 to deal with hardship and losses arising from the unusually prolonged bad weather during the previous winter.

The detailed administration of the scheme is a matter for An Bord Iascaigh Mhara who advise that information in relation to individual payments is confidential.

To date, some £506,000 has been paid to 528 crewmen under the scheme. Payments to 387 vessel owners to date amount to around £2 million. Just over £482,000 has been paid to the owners of 166 vessels in respect of the loss of static gear.

A number of vessel owners who were deemed eligible for assistance under the package had existing liabilities in respect of loans received from BIM. In cases where owners were in arrears in respect of their repayments to BIM, the amounts allocated under the emergency aid package were credited against outstanding liabilities. Where veseel owners were up to date in repayments, full payments due under the scheme were made.
