Vol. 451 No. 4

Written Answers. - Fishery Protection Service.

Michael Smith

Question:

51 Mr. M. Smith asked the Minister for the Marine the amount of increased funding annually his Department is expecting to receive from the EU in respect of the survelliance costs of the Irish Fishery Protection Service in view of agreements reached at the December 1994, Council meeting. [6563/95]

As part of the agreement reached at the Fisheries Council last December on Iberian Accession, a firm commitment was given that additional financial support would be provided to Ireland towards the very significant capital and current costs arising from our heavy, and increasing, surveillance commitments. Pending the substantive negotiations on the provision of these additional funds, it is not possible to estimate the precise levels of additional financial resources to be made available. It is my intention, in these negotiations, to secure the most favourable outcome possible.
