Vol. 451 No. 5

Written Answers. - Juvenile Justice Bill.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

141 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Justice when a general draft of the juvenile justice Bill was circulated to Government Departments; the Departments to which the Bill was circulated; and the number of sections it contained. [6972/95]

The general scheme of a juvenile justice Bill was circulated to interested Government Departments and offices on 4 August 1994 for any observations they might have on the scheme. The scheme was circulated on the understanding that certain policy matters would be subject to ongoing interdepartmental discussions. The Departments circulated were: Taoiseach, Finance, Health, Education, Environment, Social Welfare, Enterprise and Employment, Equality and Law Reform and Defence and the offices were those of the Attorney General and Tánaiste. Observations have been received from all those Departments and offices. However, in the case of the Departments of Education and Health, the observations dealt only with technical or drafting matters leaving over for discussion certain core policy issues relevant to those Departments and my Department. Formal discussions are taking place between all three Departments in order to identify and solve all outstanding issues.

There were 208 heads in the scheme as circulated.
