Written Answers. - Resort Renewal Tax Relief Scheme.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

18 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Finance if he will meet a deputation from the Salthill Tourist and Development Association to discuss the case for the inclusion of Salthill in the list of traditional seaside resorts included in the pilot scheme announced in the budget; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5988/95]

Robert Molloy

Question:

61 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to include Salthill in the list of traditional seaside resorts eligible for the resort renewal tax relief scheme; and if he will meet with a deputation from the Salthill Tourist and Development Association to discuss the matter. [6033/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 61 together.

As I announced in my budget speech, a new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts has been introduced on a pilot basis with effect from 1 July 1995 for a three year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts.

I would stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of a trial or experimental nature. It must therefore be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy. For these reasons, it is not intended to extend the scheme to Salthill and a meeting with a delegation from Salthill would serve no useful purpose at this stage.
