Vol. 452 No. 1

Written Answers. - Radio Licensing.

Síle de Valera

Question:

32 Miss de Valera asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht his views regarding the need for a licence for personal radios and walkmans. [7361/95]

Statutory Instrument Number 211 of 1972, entitled the Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1926, (Section 3) (Exemption of Sound Broadcasting Receivers) Order, 1972, exempted apparatus designed to receive sound broadcasts only from the need to be licensed. I have no plans at present to change this position.

However, options for funding broadcasting services in this country will be one of the many issues for debate and discussion arising from the Green Paper on Broadcasting, which will be published tomorrow. I do not wish to inhibit discussion on the Green Paper by taking a final position on any particular aspect at this stage. Any legislative changes which I will be bringing forward will be informed by the responses which I receive to the Green Paper.
