Vol. 452 No. 1

Written Answers. - Transmission Masts Radiation.

Máirín Quill

Question:

64 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will consider the setting up of an independent body under the Radiological Protection Act, 1991, to investigate the non-ionizing radiation hazards arising out of the proliferation of transmission masts around the country. [7750/95]

I do not accept the assertion contained in the Deputy's question that there is a hazard arising out of the alleged proliferation of transmission masts.

In licensing the use of the radio frequency spectrum, I have regard to the best international practice, in particular, the guidelines of the International Radiation Protection Agency, the IRPA. I understand that the limits which have been established by the IRPA are limits within which it is safe to work and live on the basis of all expert knowledge.

I have no evidence before me that transmission facilities licensed to operate by my Department are operating outside the IRPA guidelines, or that there is any need to make them subject to those guidelines.

Accordingly, I have no plans to give the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland additional powers in relation to non-ionising radiation, or to set up an independent body to further investigate the matter.
