Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Vote for Emigrants.

Mary Harney

Question:

53 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment if a date for the holding of a referendum in relation to votes for emigrants has been agreed. [7518/95]

A constitutional amendment Bill is being drafted to provide for the election by emigrants of three Members to Seanad Éireann in substitution for three of the 11 Members who, under existing provisions, are nominated by the Taoiseach. As I indicated in reply to Questions Nos. 9, 57, 61 and 64 on 2 February last, it is intended that the referendum on the Bill will be held at the same time as the proposed referendum on divorce.
