Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Waste Management.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

52 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authorities which have prepared waste management plans and special waste management plans as required under EU regulations; whether he has satisfied himself that the plans so far prepared comply with the requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7771/95]

The making of general or special waste plans is at present the responsibility of each county council or county borough corporation in respect of its functional area. I understand that all such authorities have made general waste plans. I also understand that all such authorities have completed special waste plans in either draft or final form except in the case of one authority where a special waste plan is still in course of preparation.

I propose to include provision in the forthcoming Waste Bill for the transfer of responsibility for hazardous waste management planning to the Environmental Protection Agency.
