Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Radiotherapy Machines.

Mary Wallace

Question:

63 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that all radiotherapy machines in the country are located in two cities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7803/95]

Limerick East): I can confirm that radiotherapy machines are in place at two public hospitals, St Luke's and St. Anne's Hospital, Dublin and Cork University Hospital.

The Deputy may be aware that I have approved an investment package in excess of £9 million for St Luke's and St Anne's Hospital. This investment will see the hospital developed as a national centre of excellence in the treatment of cancer and provide for a complete upgrading of accommodation and equipment throughout the hospital. Specifically, in relation to radiotherapy equipment, I have provided £3 million to enable the hospital to purchase a package of new state of the art equipment. This equipment is now on order and will be commissioned at the earliest date.

On taking office I set as a priority the development of services to combat cancer. Accordingly, I have established a cancer review group in the Department to prepare a comprehensive cancer strategy. The work of the review group is due to be completed by mid-year.

The initiative on cancer was prompted by the perceived need to ensure the provision of an equitable and high quality cancer service throughout the country. The objective is to take all measures possible to reduce the incidence of cancer and to ensure that those who develop cancer receive the most effective care and treatment.

The capital intensive nature of specialised radiotherapy equipment and the specialist staff required to support its operation was a key factor in the decision to concentrate services in two major centres. I will be considering the need for the further development of radiotherapy services upon receipt of the recommendations of the review group.
