Vol. 452 No. 2

Written Answers. - Treatment of Ovarian Cancer.

Mary Wallace

Question:

64 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the benefits which the drug Taxol can have for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer; and if he will make funds available for its use once it is licensed in this country. [7804/95]

Limerick East): On the recommendation of the National Drugs Advisory Board, this drug has been authorised for the treatment of ovarian cancer which is not responsive to the standard platinum containing therapy. Because of the particular nature of the drug, its use and administration is confined to hospital settings under the supervision of the appropriate medical consultant. The funding of this drug is, accordingly, a matter for the hospitals concerned.
