Vol. 452 No. 6

Written Answers. - Trade in the EU Markets.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

24 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if his attention has been drawn to figures compiled by IBEC which show that Irish exporters are still experiencing difficulties in EU markets despite the completion of the internal market; the proposals, if any, he has to remedy the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8356/95]

I am aware of the recently-published survey carried out by IBEC, which highlighted barriers to trade faced by Irish exporters in EU markets. Indeed, I encouraged IBEC to carry out this survey as part of a strategy to ensure that the Single Market is working effectively for Irish companies.

The survey finding that over one-third of Irish exporters feel that they are not getting a fair deal from the Single Market, while worrying, will need closer analysis to ascertain precisely the nature of the problems encountered. IBEC are already in contact with my Department about specific complaints. As the necessary detailed information is supplied to my Department, these complaints will be pursued vigorously with the Commission and with the member states concerned.
