Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Compensation Claim.

Michael McDowell

Question:

14 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice if compensation has been sought by the victims of Fr. Brendan Smyth in respect of suffering caused to them by the long delay in extraditing him to Northern Ireland to face trail for child abuse; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8492/95]

No such claim has been made to my Department and there is no scheme operated by my Department to which such a claim would be appropriate.

However, I understand from the Attorney General that solicitors acting for individuals comprehended by the Deputy's question have sought payments to their clients in the circumstances referred to by the Deputy. I also understand that the Chief State Solicitor has written to the solicitors acting on behalf of those persons informing them that there is no liability in law in respect of their claim.

As the solicitors representing the persons concerned have indicated that legal proceedings are to be issued, it would be inappropriate for me to say anything further.
