Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Shannon Town Status.

Tony Killeen

Question:

63 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for the Environment when Shannon town will be granted urban district council status. [8544/95]

The Local Government Reorganisation Commission, established in January this year, will formulate proposals for the modernisation of town local government including proposals as to the appropriate classification of existing town authorities, the number of classes of such authorities, functions, staffing, relationships with county councils, and criteria and procedures for the possible establishment of authorities for towns currently having none.

The commission is required to report and make recommendations within 12 months of the date of its establishment. Pending receipt of that report, I do not propose to initiate any proposals for changes in the status of existing towns.
