Vol. 452 No. 7

Written Answers. - Motor Insurance Offences.

Ivor Callely

Question:

70 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice her views on the reason the number of prosecutions for motor insurance offences has increased steadily over recent years; the measures, if any, she proposes to reduce such offences; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7669/95]

I supplied the Deputy with particulars of prosecutions for insurance offences in recent years on 14 March 1995. These figures clearly indicate the priority given to this area of law enforcement by the Gardaí.

The continued, rigorous, enforcement of the Traffic Laws is the surest way of reducing the number of motorists who contravene the law in relation to motor insurance. I have been assured by the Garda authorities that their policy of strict enforcement will continue and will develop to accommodate the ever-increasing volume of traffic on the roads.

In this connection, the Deputy may wish to note that the number of vehicles under licence has increased from approximately 516,000 in 1969 to approximately 1.15 million in 1993.
