Responsibility for the protection, conservation, management and development of inland fisheries including the snap net sector of the estuarine salmon fishery is a matter for the Regional Fisheries Boards.
A full review of policy for the ongoing management of the Irish wild salmon industry is underway within the Department at present. The review, which encompasses the traditional legal exploitation of salmon in estuaries including that undertaken by snap nets, is premised on the need to secure the rational development of the salmon resource in line with conservation, environmental and socio-economic objectives.
